The amazing Alice Pasquini has been awing us since we first laid eyes on her works. The Italian artist has a strong style with clear topics; everyday life with a focus on femininity. It only has been a year or so since we’ve heard from her but it seems like her work skyrocketed both on and offline. Since a few days Alice opened a new solo show in the 999 contemporary gallery in Rome called ‘Cinderella pissed me off’, a title perfectly fitting Alice her style and works. To quote a small bit from the press release “The whole of Alice’s work is from a girl’s perspective and speaks about real life, real and at times, brutal. The work of the Roman artist is dedicated to all those princesses who prefer four mice and a pumpkin to a carriage with white horses “. All in all we’ve got enough reasons to ask this interesting artist some questions. Please enjoy our interview with Alice Pasquini!
“But what influences even more are people stories. Social life is an important thing here. Any excuse for having a coffee and chat.”
So you’re from Rome right? Can you tell me a bit about how it is growing up and living in Rome, and how it influences your art?
I spent my childhood on the bench in a square with a group of friends. Rome is a city where you live outdoors, a city which is beautiful to walk and lose yourself.
Every corner of this city has something amazing, everything is designed by artists and you can see so much (hi)story.
When you grow up in a place like this you have a lot of consideration about art.
But what influences even more are people stories. Social life is an important thing here. Any excuse for having a coffee and chat.
You’ve also been to our hometown of Amsterdam quite a few times, what do you like about this city (if anything at all ;))
I could say the van Gogh museum and canals, but frankly speaking… I love to smoke and sketch in Coffeeshops
We know that you draw a lot of women, strong, independent, but most of all ‘real’. Is there a main character? And if so, is there a story attached?
I draw people on the bus, or at the airports, in the bar or at park. I draw my friends, my sisters, sleeping or taking the coffee. I am not a portraitist. I like to tell the very little and intimacy stories.
Your collaborations with C215 have greatly impressed us before, is there anything specifically you’ve learned from working with him?
Technically speaking before to meet Chris I was not using stencils. With a realistic style you need a lot of time to paint proportion. So now I cut my drawing and then I paint it free hand. In this way I am able to go quicker when I paint illegal in the street.
Now I imagine you’ve always been artistic, but the last few years it seems you’ve got really well known. Do you feel that way as well, and if so, how do you deal with all the attention, etc?
In the last three years I have been traveling and painting a lot. My life is always been a chaos, but now I receive more emails.
Do you ever get bad critics about your work?
Not in my face…
Your new solo show is called ‘Cinderella pissed me off’ (lovely title, haha). What excites you most about doing this solo show?
I am building an imaginative doll’s house whit a lot of incredible materials I found on the road! I am having a lot of fun
If you could fill a swimming pool with anything you’d like (your favourite items, whatever), what would it be?
Nutella
What can we expect from Alice in the feature?
She will continued to paint, travel, be agitated
